Eastern U.K. Hit by 5.2 Magnitude Earth Quake

The United Kingdom went through its worst earthquake since 1984 early today.

A tremor with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale struck in Lincolnshire, eastern England, according to the British Geological Survey. The inhabitants of eastern England felt the tremor at about 12:56 a.m. local time. The quake hit at about 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of London and sent shock waves across the country.

There were reports of some minor damages. For example, in the town of Market Rasen, located at just 5 miles from the quake’s epicenter, several locals saw the chimneys of their homes damaged, said the BGS which was that it was “inundated with calls from the public, media and emergency services throughout England.'' The Lincolnshire police have also received numerous calls from people about the tremor.

The quake’s epicenter was in Market Rasen, a small market town in Lincolnshire.

The last earthquake comparable to this one that hit the U.K. occurred in 1984 when it struck the Lleyn Peninsula in Wales. That quake measured 5.4 on the Richter scale. These facts were provided by the BGS, which also said that such earth quakes usually occur in the country about every 30 years.

The Survey initially said the magnitude was of 5.3. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake as magnitude 4.7 and said it was 6.2 miles deep.

Many inhabitants, who are unaccustomed with earthquakes, said they felt their homes shaken.

In an interview with Sky News, Rafael Abreu of the U.S. Geological Survey, labeled the earthquake which hit England as “a moderate earthquake". He added that the quake was a shallow interplate earthquake.

Julian Bukits of the British Geological Survey said that about 200 tremors hit Britain each year, but only 10 percent are strong enough to be felt, the Associated Press reported.

The North West Ambulance service said its crews also felt the tremor, but fortunately they hadn’t received “actual calls from the public," a spokeswoman, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with the service's policy.
