Electronic Arts said it is currently working at the game inspired from Mario Puzo's mafioso drama The Godfather II. The sequel is scheduled for release in February of 2009 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms.
According to a statement released by the game’s developer, the game based on The Godfather II expands the story to include criminal operations in 1960s Cuba, Florida and Godfather mainstay New York City.
The key to the crime empire of the Corleone family in the follow-up to last year’s multi-platinum hit is the fact that it has a customized crew system. All the family members are each specialized in a specific field such as demolitions, arson, engineering, first-aid and more.
“As The Don you control the family, sending some of your men on missions while heading off into action with others," EA’s official press release explained.
The new game is based on the classic Francis Ford Coppola film The Godfather II. After being anointed by Don Corleone as Don of New York, the players will move forward and expand in new cities by extorting businesses, monopolizing illegal crime rings and defeating new families to eventually become the most powerful mob clan in the United States.
Developed at the EA Redwood Stores studio, The Godfather II also features a new innovative strategy called “The Don’s View.” Through it, the players will be able to oversee the entire world as they grow the family business. The game’s name will be made public exclusively on Spike TV’s GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley on Friday, Aug. 15.
The news about the release comes about two moths after the son of Mario Puzo, the author who wrote the story of "The Godfather", said he plans to sue Paramount Pictures because the company didn’t share the revenues from the first video game based on the story which his father wrote in a successful book which then became the source of an award-winning movie.
Anthony Puzo filed suit against Paramount Pictures on June 18 in the Los Angeles Superior Court. He is seeking at least $1 million in damages for breach of contract.
