Nintendo Wii is the only gaming console that has left behind the traditional approach to gaming, replacing the gamepad with a movement sensor shaped like a remote that is widely known as a Wiimote. The Wii is currently the leader in consoles sales and maybe this new and unusual approach to gaming may be part of its charm. Removing the gamepad with a sensor also widens up the horizon for what the console can be used for. The Wii Fit had a huge success as it promised gamers that it will keep them physically fit through the use of their favorite gaming console, the Wii.
Recently, EA has announced that it will launch in spring 2009 a new game that focuses on the same principle as the Wii Fit. The Ea Sports fit game will supposedly keep gamers fit and off the couch through the use of interactive mini games designed by Oprah’s personal trainer, Bob Greene. The game will make use of basically the same equipment as the Wii Fit and will include boxing and tennis mini games and cardio vascular exercises that help the upper and lower body. Like other fitness games, EA Sports Active will feature a 30 day challenge mode designed specifically for losing weight.
Fitness games are new to the gaming world and it seems that the idea is catching on like wild fire and though many people don’t expect EA’s fitness game to become more popular than Nintendo’s version, we might just witnessed the birth of a completely new gaming genre.
