Citing quality issues, Electronic Arts has decided to cancel
Tiberium, a first person shooter game set in Command & Conquer universe.
The game was under development at EA Los Angeles Studio, but according to a
statement released by EA spokesperson Mariam Sughayer the game was "not on
track to meet the high quality standards".
Announced in December last year, Tiberium was intended to be
released for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. According to EA, the story of Tiberium should have followed
the adventures of Forward Battle Commander Ricardo Vega and his elite squads.
As EA said last years, the game’s story revolved around an alien tower has stood dormant, looming like
an unholy mountain over a wasteland once known as the Mediterranean Sea.
The
tower was thought to be a relic of the Third Tiberium War; a devastating war
fought for control over Tiberium crystal. But in fact, deep within the tower,
plans are in motion for an alien invasion and Ricardo Vega should save the
planet.
However, something went very wrong with Tiberium, because in
July this year, EA has decided to postpone the game until 2009.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Mike Verdu, who heads
the EA studio creating Tiberium, stated in an email to employees that “the game
had fundamental design challenges from the start".
EA Los Angeles studio is currently working on Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, which is set to be released later this year for PC and Xbox 360.
