Kevin Durant sprained his left ankle in the SuperSonics' exhibition game against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night. The second overall choice in the NBA draft left the court with crutches and wearing a soft boot after his team had lost the game.
In accordance with the statement released through a Sonics spokesman via e-mail, Durant won’t make the trip to Portland for Wednesday night's game or to the team's preseason finale against Phoenix in Vancouver, British Columbia on Friday.
His presence on court for Seattle's season opener Oct. 31 at Denver is therefore uncertain.
"He'll be all right," Sonics forward Chris Wilcox said. "He's tough. He said it wasn't that serious. Hopefully it wasn't that serious and we'll get him back before the regular season."
The injury occurred when Durant attempted to steal a pass late in regulation of a game that eventually went to overtime. The 19-year-old was forced to leave the court with 2:10 remaining in the fourth quarter and, aided by a trainer, he walked into a tunnel leading to the locker room.
Durant scored 21 points. Throughout the five preseason games Durant, national player of the year last season in his only season at the University of Texas, averaged 18.4 points per game, the team’s highest.
The SuperSonics fell to a 1-5 record, while Golden State improved to 3-2. The only team with a worst preseason record than Seattle is the winless Miami Heat.
