Tim Duncan suffered an injury on his right knee during the San Antonio Spurs game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. He will undergo an MRI exam Monday to evaluate the injury.
The unfortunate incident happened in the second quarter when the two-time league Most Valuable Player fell on the floor and grabbed his right knee. His team mates rushed and helped him off the court. Team officials said he is expected to miss some playing time.
Duncan was fighting with Portland's James Jones for position beneath the basket. The fight ended with Duncan bruising his knee and spraining his ankle. After the game, the club officials said that Duncan's ligaments looked stable and X-rays were negative for breaks.
"It's more scary than anything else - at least that's what I'm hoping," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "He wants to see what the pictures say but he's pretty upbeat. I hope if it is of any consequence, it won't be for very long. But he will probably miss a little bit of time."
Despite loosing one of their most important players, the Spurs won 100-79 over the Blazers.
French guard Tony Parker took control of the offence after Duncan’s exit. He led San Antonio in scoring with 27 points and added eight assists. Brent Barry followed with 11 points and Argentinean Manu Ginobili added 10 points. The Spurs have won three straight games and eight of their last nine.
For the Blazers, Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster scored 17 points apiece. Portland has lost the last four games.
Duncan helped the defending NBA champions to a 14-3 record this season. He also led the Spurs to NBA titles in 1999, 2003, 2005 and this year.
