Just days after Apple sued the Mac clone maker, PsyStar, a new non-Apple iPhone applications store has merged which offers a software pack for just $24.95. Furthermore, the seller claims that your iPhone does not need to be unlocked in order to install their applications! Also, upon purchasing this rogue iPhone Apps bundle you will receive free updates for life, or so the story goes.
There are actually ten applications: Customize, SNES, Screenshot, Video Recorder, Instant Messenger, MMS, RingTones, YouTube Downloader, Books and VNC. There is no real proof yet that the website is a scam, but several things point in that direction. Apparently, according to a Gizmodo blog, they used the address of Little Lever School Specialist Language College to register, which is 261 Church Street, Little Lever, Bolton.
Other users claimed that the applications are available for free. As of now, their PayPal account is alive and well, which means that the unauthorized iPhone Apps store is either not a total scam, or that it was not noticed by Apple yet.
Meanwhile, iPhone-Dev Team, just a few days after the official launch of Apple’s new iPhone, came up with a tool that “jailbreaks” not only older iPhones, but also the new 3G one and iPod Touches. The Pwnage 2.0 tool allows unauthorized third party applications to run on the 2.0 firmware. However, the new tool fails to unlock iPhone 3Gs from the network they are set on (namely AT&T in the U.S.).
