A bridge that was under construction in Dubai collapsed near luxury hotels and high-rises in the Gulf trading and tourism hub causing the deaths of at leas seven and the injuring of fifteen.
The tragic incident seems to be a result of an error of those who were constructing the bridge. The collapse took place in a new part of the city, where hundreds of houses are being built along the Gulf coast and on man-made islands.
According to deputy police chief Jamal al-Marri there were seven deaths reported and 15 people were injured in the collapse. Six of those who died were Indians. Nine workers were immediately taken to the nearest hospital for medical care, a police officer at the site told Reuters.
The accident was reportedly caused by a crane operator at Dubai Marina. He made a mistake and accidentally knocked off one of the bridge pillars down, thus triggering a chain reaction that eventually lead to the total collapse of the structure.
Matar Saeed al-Tayer, head of Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, said:
"This is a human mistake and the contractor bears all the responsibility," an RTA statement said.
After the collapse took place creating a cloud of dust, the police intervened and cordoned off the area, blocked the adjacent roads and diverted the traffic as a precautionary measure. The ambulances made their appearance at the scene very quick and rushed the injured to the Rashid Hospital Trauma Centre.
The names of the deceased, according to The Hindu, are: R Mohan Lakshmanan, A Govindam, Mathai Laghan, K Thangan (all from Tamil Nadu), Surendra Singh (Patna) and P Jagdish (Lucknow).
Their bodies are currently in the custody of the Dubai police.
