It seems people never learn. After all these accidents
caused by driving under the influence of alcohol, after all these campaigns
against drinking and driving, some people are still ignorant, putting in danger
their own life as well as other people’s lives.
This was the case of Nassau
police officer Kenneth Baribault who was doing his job, when he was struck by a
drunken driver on the Long Island Expressway.
Ironically, the police officer had pulled over another
allegedly drunken driver and was sitting in his patrol car when the driver of a
Mercedes smashed into him.
According to Newsday, Lt. Kevin Smith said that Baribault
suffered severe head trauma and had broken bones in both his upper and lower torso.
The officer was operated, as he also had a blood clot in his brain. He remains
unconscious and his condition is still critical.
The police officer had also a stroke of luck because Philip
Scarfi, an off-duty firefighter, was on the Long Island Expressway as well and,
when he saw the accident, he rushed over, pulled Baribault out of the smashed
car and used Baribault's portable radio to call for help. The victim was
transported by an ambulance to a hospital.
The driver of the Mercedes was Rahiem Griffin, 27, who had a
suspended license. He was also taken to the hospital but with minor injuries. Griffin was charged with
driving while intoxicated.
The driver of the car pulled over by Baribault, Marcin Bykuc,
25, was not injured but he was also charged with driving while intoxicated.
According to Newsday, the accident stopped traffic for more
than 5 hours.
