Drummer Buddy Miles, Hendrix Collaborator, Dies

Buddy Miles, the innovative drummer who played with musical legends like Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Carlos Santana, passed away Tuesday night at his home in Austin, TX. He was 60.

Publicist Duane Lee told the Associated Press that Buddy Miles passed away Tuesday night in Austin, Texas. He had been suffering from congestive heart failure. He was 60. Lee did not know the official cause of death.

The Omaha, Neb. native, born Sept. 5, 1947, is best known for recording with Jimi Hendrix in Band of Gypys, from 1969 to Hendrix’s death in 1970. He co-founded Band of Gypsys with Hendrix and bassist Billy Cox, according to his website.

The trio released one self-titled live album, which chronicled four shows performed on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day 1970 at New York’s Fillmore East. Miles is considered by many to be among the first musicians to fuse psychedelic rock with soul, blues and jazz, Variety notes.

Miles also recorded the legendary rock album “Electric Ladyland,” released in 1968, with Hendrix. He is perhaps best known for “Them Changes,” a song he wrote and performed.

His love for music was nurtured by his father, whose jazz combo the BeBops he had already joined by the age of 12. He went on to play for The Delfonics, The Ink Spots and Wilson Pickett, according to a report on his website.

He co-founded the band Electric Flag in 1967 with guitarist Mike Bloomfield.

His website notes that he also played with Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters, Barry White, David Bowie, George Clinton, Carlos Santana and Bootsy Collins. One of the albums he recorded with Santana went platinum.

Miles hit another career peak in the 1980s, when he sang in the claymation commercials featuring the California Raisins. As Buddy Raisin, Miles performed lead singing covering Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It through the Grapevine” in the popular television commercials.

Lee told the AP that he remembered Miles as a man who “loved to laugh.”

“We spent more time laughing than anything else. He was a great joke teller,” he said.
