A tour bus transporting hip-hop performer Snoop Dogg was
pulled over by police and two people accompanying the rapper were arrested on
marijuana possession charges on Thursday, just a few hours before a concert in Dallas,
the Associated Press cited a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public
Safety. Snoop Dogg was due to perform at a concert near the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
He is on tour with alternative rock group 311.
Charlie Morgan, the DPS spokesman, reported that members of
a commercial vehicle inspection team stopped the bus on Interstate 45 in Corsicana
because it had an expired registration sticker. However, troopers ended up
searching the vehicle for drugs after they smelled marijuana and finally
discovered two ounces of the drug.
The two men, Ethan Calhoun, 27, and Kevin Barkey, 26, were
arrested after acknowledging that they owned the drugs, Charlie Morgan informed
the Associated Press. They were both taken to the Navarro County Jail and face
fines of up to $2,000 and six months of imprisonment if they are found guilty,
as reported by the same source. Furthermore, bond was set at $1,500 each.
Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr.,
was not charged this time. However, the hip-hop artist has not stayed away from
police attention in the past. Last year, he was arrested at Bob
Hope Airport
in Burbank, Calif.,
on suspicion of carrying marijuana and was later charged with gun possession
after a firearm was found in his home. Moreover, he did not contest the
accusations in April 2007 and agreed to five years of probation and 800 hours
of community service.
