For three hours police and drug cartel gunmen fought in Tijuana in what was the latest clash at the U.S.
border where President Felipe Calderón has declared a war against drug cartels.
He sent federal agents and the Mexican Army in the area to
destroy them.
On Thursday night the state authorities said that a gunman
was killed, while four police officers were injured, the New York Times
reports.
Police discovered the bodies of six people in the house where
the gunmen took stand against the authorities.
Police believed that the house was a cell of the Arellano
Felix drug cartel.
The victims appeared to be kidnapped.
Soldiers were forced to evacuate a school nearby, while residents
barricaded in their homes.
The fight began Thursday around 11 a.m. in La Mesa neighborhood. The agents started to
shoot at the house and federal police officers drew in.
Reporters for Radio Red FM said that the gunmen fired with
large-caliber machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.
Five gunmen were arrested by police.
According to state authorities, before making the arrest,
police had to make assaults on the house.
The stand off occurred in the same neighborhood where two
police officers were killed Tuesday by gunmen.
Later gunmen killed a police commander along with his family
after breaking into his home.
In the house, police officials found 11 automatic rifles and
three bulletproof vests, the Guardian Unlimited informs.
Another battle of this kind was fought last week in Rio Bravo, Mexico
between drug dealers and government authorities. According to authorities,
three gunmen were killed and 10 officials were injured.
