Driver Burns to Death after Truck Crashes on I-91

The driver of a tanker truck carrying gasoline burned to death as he rolled over with the large vehicle on I-91 in Chicopee. The diesel truck exploded at impact sending a fireball 60 feet in the air.

The trucker was identified as Aaron Staelens of Richmond, N.H. the 43-year-old truck driver died at about 8 p.m. on Friday night at the Massachusetts General Hospital, according to hospital spokesperson Jennifer Gundersen.

The driver was first taken at Bay State Medical Center shortly after the crash, but then flown to Mass. General where he died.

Staelens tried to avoid a crash that occurred in front of him around 9:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Exit 13A on the Chicopee curve. Then he crashed into a guardrail and exploded. The trailer of the truck detached, tumbled down an embankment and then onto Center Street in Chicopee neighborhood.

"It's the most dangerous curve on the entire stretch of I-91, and it is a direct result of faulty design," said Mayor Michael Bissonette of Chicopee according to The Boston Globe.

A passenger of a car involved in the same incident was also taken to Baystate Medical Center, but released after being treated for minor injuries.

Several drivers who stopped their cars and tried to help those involved in the huge crash failed to pull Staelens out of the truck’s burning cabin.

The firefighers arrived quickly at the scene and after 90 minutes managed to extinguish the 1,000 gallons of blazing diesel fuel, said State Police Captain Barry O'Brien.

Staelens was driving an Abenaqui Carriers-owned truck. Another gasoline tanker owned by North Hampton-based company crashed and exploded in December in Everett severly damaging several houses and numerous cars.
