The Dresden Elbe Valley is a world heritage site and building a bridge over the Elbe River could strip the German city of its prestigious title. Local authorities have come up though with an alternative that could assuage UNESCO.
Dresden, perhaps most famous for the controversial World War II bombing it suffered in 1945, became a world heritage site in 2004. Subsequent plans to build a bridge over the Elbe River jeopardized this title, with UNESCO threatening to withdraw it.
The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said the construction would have negative impact on the Elbe meadows which cross the city, 20 kilometers long.
The UN cultural organization demanded that the building plan of the Waldschloesschen Bridge stop and asked authorities to find an alternative, which alternative seems to have arisen.
The city council organized a special sitting and voted on Tuesday for a new plan proposed by a firm of Stuttgart architects. The previous project amounted to 160 million euros ($210 million).
The recently found alternative will be evaluated by UNESCO at a meeting in New Zealand that runs from June 23 to July 2.
