Dreams Come True: Melissa Lawson, the New “Nashville Star”

Dreams do come true, especially when you try and work for making your dream become reality. This is the story of Melissa Lawson, a 32-year-old mother of five from Arlington, who dared to take a chance on life and, to her surprise, won NBC's country music talent competition Nashville Star. Besides winning a Toyota Tundra pick-up truck and the contest, Melissa Lawson also won a record contract with Warner Bros. Records.

“I was really sure they were going to call Gabe's name.  That's what I was anticipating in my mind. So when they called my name, it was so shocking.  I was so excited and there were so many things going through my mind all at the same moment,” said the winner, according to BuddyTV.

Melissa Lawson was the sixth-season winner of the country music talent competition. Texan Gabe Garcia came on second place and Shawn Mayer from Iowa won the third place. She said that she was very happy to win and realized that, along with her, won all those who voted for her and supported her, including her family.

“It was just such a special moment. It’s been a great ride, from beginning to end,” said Melissa Lawson who is eager to return to her normal life. She plans to give her truck to her husband who managed to take care of the house and of the rest of the family, while she was in the competition.

He has been driving a crummy little truck for so long so we could buy a car for me that was big enough to haul all the boys around. He deserves this truck,” Lawson told People magazine.

During the show, Melissa Lawson lost some weight. She initially weighed under 300 pounds and she realized that she needed to get healthy. She undertook a diet and began exercising, losing 45 pounds since the first “Nashville Star” audition.

The 4 finalists Melissa Lawson, Gabe Garcia, Shawn Mayer and Coffey will go on a nationwide tour this year. The series managed to open the road to fame for Miranda Lambert, Buddy Jewel and Chris Young. Melissa Lawson leaves Saturday for China to perform her first single at the Olympics on August 12th.
