Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Hudson and boyfriend
David Otunga became fiancée and fiancé over the weekend, reports People
magazine on its website.
A representative for “Dreamgirls” actress Jennifer Hudson
confirmed exclusively to People magazine that the thespian and her boyfriend of
less than a year, David Otunga, became engaged Friday night in Los Angeles.
David Otunga is better known as “Punk” from the VH1 reality
show “I Love New York
2.” He reportedly proposed to his beloved on her 27th birthday, presenting her
with a Neil Lane diamond ring.
The two have been dating for less than a year and while they
may “love” New York or dwell in Los Angeles, are both Chicago natives.
Jennifer Hudson had her career breakthrough moment two years
ago, when she was cast as Effie White, a character originally embodied by
Jennifer Holliday in the Broadway performance.
Joining a cast that included Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy,
Jamie Foxx and Danny Glover, Hudson outshone her fellow cast members in the
musical adaptation of “Dreamgirls” and went on to receive the Academy Award for
Best Supporting Actress.
Prior to this, she had already gained the public’s attention
by participating on the third season of “American Idol,” finishing in seventh
place.
The wide critical acclaim she has received for her
performance in “Dreamgirls” (including a Golden Globe for Best Performance by
an Actress in a Supporting Role, a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best
Supporting Actress, an NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actress and a
BAFTA Award for Actress in a Supporting Role) strengthened Hudson’s career
immensely.
This summer, she joined Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon,
Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis in “Sex and the City: The Movie,” which was
hugely successful at the box office worldwide.
Her next film, “The Secret Life of Bees,” where she stars
alongside Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning and Alicia Keys, opens on Oct. 17.
While acting has become such an important part of her
career, Hudson
has not left music aside either. Her debut solo album, “Jennifer Hudson,” will
be in stores Sept. 30.
