David Beckham had a dream start for LA Galaxy on Wednesday, scoring the first goal and providing a classy pass that Landon Donovan drilled past DC United’s goalkeeper, as Galaxy savored the sweet taste of victory.
Beckham surprised the home crowd when he stepped on the pitch as captain Wednesday night, but the real surprises were yet to emerge. After 27 minutes the British midfielder confidently took the ball and gave his adversaries a first bitter taste of defeat. His free kick was perfect and goalie Troy Perkins watched helplessly how the ball went straight into the net’s top left corner.
The 32-year-old player took his role as captain seriously and led his team mates to a clash with the Mexicans of CF Pachuca in the SuperLiga final. Despite a injured left ankle, Becks didn’t hold out and got into some rough tackles, one of them getting him a first yellow card.
Quickly after the referee signaled the game’s restart, Beckham found Donovan open in the middle and set him on collision-course with another goal that would seal the victory for Galaxy.
It was 2-0 and the Home Depot Center was exulting in the stands. The team finally got on the right track and Beckham took the driver’s seat without any second thoughts. After 63 minutes, England’s former captain left the pitch to receive the fans’ applause.
Everybody was pleased, after two months of watching Beckham tossing and turning on the bench, while the player praised his colleagues for their effort and commitment.
“Tonight was not just about my goal and Landon's goal. I think it was a team performance that was exceptional, we worked hard as a team and played hard as a team and we won as a team,” he said.
