DreamWorks Dumps AMD, Begins Strategic Partnership With Intel

DreamWorks Animation SKG replaced one strategic partner with another, as it unveiled on Tuesday the end of the road for the AMD partnership and the beginning of a new friendship with Intel. According to Intel, this partnership will revolutionize 3D filmmaking technology, and the first title to benefit from the collaboration will be Monsters vs. Aliens.

Intel will ensure the latest high-performance processing technologies, including future chips with multiple processing cores, the company revealed this week. This will help DreamWorks meet the increasing demands for 3D animated films.

According to Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO, the partnership between the two companies will deliver “a new level of in-theater entertainment” by combining the best elements in computer performance and computer-generated moviemaking.

Things look pretty clear: AMD got dumped for Intel after three years of beautiful relationship! According to a press release by AMD, there are no hard feelings, and the possibility of a new collaboration in the future remains real.

DreamWorks Animation's president of production John Batter said in a conversation with Nanotech: The Circuits blog that Intel's roadmap is “more closely aligned” with their needs, CNET News reports. Intel has the best technology, and that's what DreamWorks needs for their 3D plans: “You need a lot more horsepower. On Intel's upcoming generation, the number of cores is going to help us satiate the big spike in our needs.”

Intel will also be working with DreamWorks Animation to develop and promote the next-generation of 3D viewing experience and technology on a range of other platforms, including home theater, personal computers, video games, online environments and mobile devices.

DreamWorks Animation is an independent animation studios who is best known for animated films such as Shrek, Shark Tale, Madagascar, Bee Movie and Kung-Fu Panda. Its upcoming production Monsters vs. Aliens, which will be directly produced in real 3D, is scheduled to be released on March 27, 2009.
