It seems that regardless of his intentions, U.S. television personality and psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw was forced to cancel the special Britney Spears-intervention episode amid harsh criticism he received for visiting the troubled pop star while she was in the hospital the past weekend.
Dr. Phil, who made several statements explaining his visit was just a family obligation and he wasn’t seeking for publicity, released a statement on Monday saying he decided to cancel the material.
"We had planned to tape a ‘Dr. Phil Now’ show (yesterday), focusing not on the tabloid side of Britney’s latest problems, but instead on the very serious issues surrounding this case," the TV shrink posted on his website. "Clearly, it is not just Britney’s family struggling to find a way to protect adult children who cannot be ordered or compelled to seek help."
McGraw insisted that his decision to scrap the taping with Jamie and Lynne Spears was "because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family."
However, according to Life & Style magazine, Dr. Phil was more or less forced to take the decision because Britney’s parents pulled out from the taping.
"As soon as Jamie realized Dr. Phil was making public statements about Britney, including assessments of her condition, he got angry," a source told Life & Style magazine, "He started making phone calls to everybody in the family, telling them not to cooperate."
Since he couldn’t reach out to Britney through his TV program "The Dr. Phil Show," McGraw continued his media binge yesterday on "Entertainment Tonight," urging Britney to "turn to the people that love you and listen."
"You can make this OK. Your family loves you," Dr. Phil’s open statement to Britney added, "You may not always agree with what they say, with what they do, but they’ve loved you when you weren’t lovable."
