“He's not a cop. He's not a superhero. He's just a man with
a Calling.”
William Banks “has saved 257 people from addiction to drugs,
sex and gambling” thanks to his “Calling.” While he was a drug addict, Banks
missed the birth of one of his children and made a pact with God, promising
that if he gets another chance he would begin helping others who had addiction problems.
“The Cleaner” is based on the life of Warren Boyd who helps people get rid of
their addictions. He helped Courtney Love and then she recommended him to Whitney
Houston. His methods are not conventional at all but it seems that he manages
to do a good work.
William Banks’ methods are also unconventional as he
sometimes snatches the persons who need salvation. Banks and his team, formed
by Akani Cuesta (Grace Park), Arnie Swenton (Esteban Powell) and Mickey Efros (Gil
Bellows), are up for any challenge and addiction. While our “Cleaner” is
keeping his promise he once made and is helping others, his wife Melissa Banks
(Amy Price-Francis) is more and more upset that he doesn’t seem to find the
balance between his personal life and his “job.” This is not a regular nine to
five job and Banks knows it, he even takes calls in the middle of a
parent-teacher conference. The show is not brilliant or spectacular but it’s ok
and Benjamin Bratt and the other actors manage to save some parts. It not quite
realistic but it not a waste of time either. Since the man has to earn a living
his services are not free.
“We’re not listed, we don’t advertise, people find us
because they need us. We have a 75 percent relapse rate, a 27 percent rate of
mortality.”
