Donny Osmond apologized to Larry King Monday on the “Today” show after berating the talk show host for revealing on-air that Marie Osmond’s son was in rehab.
Marie Osmond was a guest on the Larry King Live show on Nov. 14 when a question from her host regarding her son seemed to take her by surprise.
Her brother Donny apologized on the “Today” show Monday for having criticized Larry King’s intervention.
“I’m not going to pull any punches here,” he said in a taped interview that aired Monday. “I was very upset about it. I thought it was very unfair for Larry King to throw that question at Marie the way that he did.”
He went on to explain that his sister called him later and revealed that news of her son’s problems had leaked to the tabloids. Larry King’s question actually allowed her to make her own statement before rumors and speculation ensued.
“I have to apologize to Larry King because I said some things against him,” he said. “In hindsight, I’m grateful that he gave Marie that platform.”
Marie issued a statement last week that said: “My son Michael is an amazing young man shown through his courage in facing his issues. As his mother I couldn't be more proud of him. The press and public has always been kind and gracious in the past and I know they will continue to respect our privacy during this time.”
She did not reveal where the 16-year-old boy was being treated or what for.
Marie and Donny became famous in the 1960s and starred on the television series “Donny and Marie Show” during the 1970s.
Marie is currently a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” an accomplishment for which her brother congratulated her on “Today.” He also mentioned the trying times Marie has had over the year: divorcing from her second husband Brian Blosil and the recent death of her father, George Osmond.
“She’s still smiling. She’s still standing. She’s still optimistic. She’s still fighting. She’s a great woman,” Donny said.
Michael is one of eight children Marie has. One is from her first marriage while the other seven were welcomed during her second marriage, which lasted some 20 years; two are biological and five adopted.
