Plastic surgeon Jan Adams, who operated on musician Kanye West’s mother one day before she died, has come under scrutiny and several DUI convictions and accusations of malpractice have surfaced.
Dona West, mother of rapper Kanye West as well as his manager, died Saturday, Oct. 10, due to “complications from surgery,” the Los Angeles coroner said Monday. An autopsy was performed Tuesday.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office said Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Jan Adams performed surgery on the 58-year-old Donda West on Friday.
She was found unresponsive and in respiratory arrest at her home the following day, CNN reports and rushed to Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center. She was pronounced dead Saturday evening, shortly after admittance, a spokeswoman for the facility said.
The BBC reported Monday that Donda West’s publicist, Patricia Green, said the retired professor and former chairwoman of the Chicago State University English department, passed away “as the result of complications from a cosmetic surgical procedure.”
Later that day, Green told People magazine that she had never confirmed Donda West’s cause of death to the BBC, as she herself had only received “unconfirmed, incomplete information” from “conflicting reports,” the magazine reports on its website.
The autopsy performed Tuesday was inconclusive pending the results of toxicology tests, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Coroner said Tuesday.
Attention has shifted to the plastic surgeon that operated West, reportedly performing a “tummy tuck and breast reduction,” per TMZ.com.
CNN reports that Jan Adams is under observation by the Medical Board of California over several DUI cases and at least two malpractice cases, according to legal documents filed in California.
Adams has reportedly had at least two DUI convictions since 2003, according to CNN, which quotes medical board executive director David Thornton, who filed a complaint against Adams earlier this year, accusing him of violating the Medical Practice Act.
Thornton’s complaint, dated April 10, says Adams has “multiple convictions for alcohol-related offenses” and asserts that the plastic surgeon was put on probation and ordered to complete an alcohol-counseling program in 2003.
Accusing Adams of unprofessional conduct and abuse of alcohol, Thornton’s complaint requests that the medical board revoke or suspend his license.
Adams has expressed his condolences for the West family. The surgeon said in a statement: “I want to first express my deepest condolences to the West family at a very difficult time.”
He offered no details of the procedure performed Friday, saying: “I hold sacred the bond of confidentiality that exists between the patient and doctor. Out of respect of the West family, and the absence of verifiable information, any comment without having first discussing that information with the family would be unprofessional.”
A spokesman for the West family has appealed for “privacy during this time of grief.”
