Dolly Parton was once again in the spotlight, as she did not
hesitate to save the day (or night, more precisely) at Saturday’s Los Angeles premiere of
“9 to 5: The Musical,” a fresh adaptation of the 1980 eponymous hit movie that
starred the country music singer.
According to reports, Dolly Parton stepped up with no second
thoughts and revived the show after the curtains suddenly came down as a result
of technical problems at the Ahmanson Theatre.
Dolly Parton’s spur-of-the-moment performance was watched by
“9 to 5” co-stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman, as well as fellow
actors Gabriel Byrne, Tracey Ullman, Blythe Danner and Jason Alexander.
Although the pre-Broadway run of the musical went on
according to schedule, it stopped abruptly at the end of the first act, when
the country singer took the entire show in her hands. She even made the
audience sing with her the theme song of “9 to 5.”
“If they can’t perform the show, I’ll do some of it from
right here,” the artist reportedly said while a team was handling the undisclosed
technical problems.
The show picked up where it left off after approximately 20
minutes, but Dolly Parton did an incredible job.
The world premiere musical features Allison Janney in
the role of Violet Newstead, Megan Hilty playing Doralee Rhodes (Dolly Parton’s
movie persona) Stephanie J. Block as Judy Bernly and Marc Kudisch as Franklin
Hart Jr.
“9 to 5: The Musical” is due for an April 2009 release on
Broadway.
