After they made it out alive from a flaming plane, DJ AM and ex Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, who were listed in critical condition, are expected to make a full recovery.
Despite the serious burns and injuries, the only two survivors of Friday night's tragic plane crash are heading in the right direction while being treated for second- and third-degree burns, Dr. Fred Mullins of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors' Hospital in Augusta told People.com during a press conference.
According to Mullins, recovery from such burns can take as long as a year but since the men suffered no other injuries, "a full recovery is expected." Still, the doctor said that the recovery could easily happen "much sooner" than a year.
Barker suffered burns on his torso and lower body, while DJ AM, was burned on his arms and a portion of his head. The doctor described both as remaining in critical but stable condition and in the intensive-care unit of the hospital. He added, "Anybody who can survive a plane crash is very lucky."
During the conference, Mullins also read a statement from the families.
"The families wish to thank fans from all over the world for their prayers and concern. Deepest sympathy is expressed to the loved ones of those who perished in the crash. As the two recuperate and mourn this loss, privacy for them, their families and friends is requested at this time."
The Learjet crashed late Friday night shortly after taking off from an airport in Columbia, where the men had just performed a concert for thousands of college students. Four others on the plane were killed: pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, Calif.; security guard Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles; and Barker’s assistant Chris Baker, 26, also of Los Angeles.
