Dr. Jan Adams, the controversial Los Angeles plastic surgeon who operated on rapper Kanye West’s mother before she died last fall, has added a new arrest to his already spotted slate.
Celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Jan Adams continues to ruin his reputation, as he was arrested Thursday in Northern California on suspicion of drunken driving.
Police said he had been using an off-ramp to get on a freeway in Vallejo in the early hours of Thursday morning. Motorists had reported a gray Jaguar going the wrong way to the California Highway Patrol, reports the Associated Press.
Officers found Adams was driving on a suspended license from a previous DUI conviction and booked him into jail.
Adams was already under investigation by the Medical Board of California, because of two alcohol-related arrests. Depending on the investigation’s results, Adams will be able to keep his medical license or will have it revoked or suspended.
Adams’ world turned upside down last year, after Donda West, mother of rapper Kanye West, died in November following cosmetic surgery performed by him. A coroner’s report established that she likely died of heart disease and complications from the tummy tuck and breast reduction procedure.
The correctness of Adams’ procedure was immediately questioned. He has denied wrongdoing in her death.
In January, Adams was a guest on Larry King’s CNN show and reiterated his self-defence. He said he needed a second chance to defend himself and to set the record straight and confessed that the publicity received after the death of West had affected his practice “horribly” and that it was “almost destroyed.”
He did not elaborate details of West’s surgery and her death, citing doctor-patient confidentiality, but said that the autopsy report did not surprise him. Adams also said at the time that he would continue to practice performing surgeries.
He also defended himself by saying that being a public figure – as host of the series “Plastic Surgery: Before and After” for five years – turned him into a target for bad publicity and lawsuits.
Adams is now scheduled for arraignment in Solano County Superior Court on Monday.
