Enchanted, a fairytale movie by Disney in a modern setting, ranked first for the second week according to box office revenue estimates. Disney's story of a cartoon princess exiled to real-world Manhattan snatched more than $17 million, with a total over its two weeks of $70.6 million.
Enchanted had the second-best five-day Thanksgiving debut ever, behind the $80.1 million grossed by Toy Story 2, also by Disney. "It's a really good place to launch a movie," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney, to AP, last week. "When you get a movie as strong and well-playing as this, it bodes well for us right through the Christmas holiday."
In Enchanted, a beautiful princess, Giselle (Amy Adams), is banished by an evil queen (Susan Sarandon) from her magical, musical animated land and thrown in modern-day Manhattan. Recovering from her initial shock, Giselle falls in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey), even if she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale prince (James Marsden).
Sony Screen Gems' family reunion holiday tale This Christmas held fast onto its second place for the second week with $8.4 million, which means the $13 million film has done $36.9 million in two weeks.
Final figures are due Monday, but it's important to note that ticket sales dipped 6 percent from the same weekend last year, even though business is strong overall as grosses for 2007 are up about 5 percent from last year. Hayden Christensen-Jessica Alba thriller "Awake," which is the weekend's only new major release, only grossed an estimated $6 million from 2,002 theaters, according to Rentrak.
