After a 13-day mission in space during which it completed the International Space Station’s power system, space shuttle Discovery is returning back home today. The touchdown is scheduled to take place at NASA’s Florida spaceport early Saturday afternoon.

The highlight of NASA’s STS-119 mission was the installation and unfurling of the ISS’ final set of two solar wings. The addition of the $300 million solar wings boosted the space station’s power capacity. This will enable the crew aboard the ISS to carry out more research and experiments in the station’s labs and also will double the station’s capability to host crew members from 3 to 6.

The Discovery space shuttle is bringing back to Earth Sandra Magnus, a now former resident of the International Space Station who spent 4 1/2 months in orbit and was now replaced by a Japanese astronaut.

However, the residents of the ISS are receiving new guests. The Russian Soyuz space shuttle will soon dock with the space station. The Soyuz has three members aboard: Expedition 19 commander Gennady Padalka, a Russian air force colonel, American astronaut, Michael Barratt, who will join the ISS crew and space tourist Charles Simonyi, a software developer, wealthy businessman and former Microsoft executive who is at his second trip to space and paid $35 million for it.

Touch down at the Kennedy Space Center is scheduled at about 1:38 p.m. today.
