When you can’t make a movie that is worth watching, you
choose to mock the ones who can…That is why Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer’s Disaster
Movie makes fun of several successful films such as No Country For Old Men,
Juno or Sex and the City. What else could we expect from the writer-directors
who worked on films such as Scary Movie, Date Movie and Meet the Spartans? More
than mocking other films, the movie also mocks homosexuals, blacks and Asian
people, among others.
So you can make an idea, the film begins with a parody of
10,000 B.C., featuring Amy Winehouse who is…surprise! somewhat of a
saber-toothed tiger hiding a crystal skull in her hairdo. Then, to our
“delight,” we have a naked guy screaming he is Beowulf and then we discover
Michael Jackson in Speed racer’s trunk. Why? No idea…
The movie goes on with plenty of “star wars:” Carrie
Bradshaw (played by a man) fights Juno, then Alvin and the chipmunks (who have rabies)
fight the princess from Enchanted, then Carmen Electra fights Kim Kardashian.
These two actresses appear as themselves, which is rather sad than funny.
Ok, we didn’t expect any witty humor from this movie, but
still, a few chuckles would have helped a lot. Or at least one.
Disaster Movie picks on celebrities that are more or less
worthy of mockery, starting with Angelina Jolie, Sarah Jessica Parker and
Michael Jackson and ending with Jessica Simpson and Justin Timberlake. Oh,
let’s not forget! At some moment, the characters start happily singing about
knowing Matt Damon. Intimately.
The film is rated PG-13, due to adult language and rude
humor, and opened Friday nationwide.
