If you live in Dallas/Fort Worth area, you may forget about
DSL or cable broadband service in order to have Internet access. Because there
is a new solution available: BPL (Broadband Over Powerline)
As announced today, beginning next year DirecTV Group will offer
to its customers Current’s (Broadband Over Powerline) high-speed Internet service
and VoIP services.
Practically customers who will choose this solution will be
able to access the Internet by plugging a BPL modem into virtually any outlet
in their home.
The two companies also promises that their service can send
data faster than the typical cable modem service in use today. The upload speed
is particularly important as users rely on greater speeds to play interactive
games or send significant volumes of digital content through the Internet. The customers
of the new service will go online at speeds ranging from 256Kbps to 3Mbps.
Also under the terms of agreement DirecTV will have the
ability ability to add other geographic markets as Current builds out its
network.
"We are pleased to partner with DIRECTV to offer them
the ability to bundle their world-renowned satellite video services together
with BPL high- speed Internet and VoIP services," said Tom Casey,
CURRENT's chief executive officer. "Consumers in Dallas will have a compelling new choice for
their broadband service and, at the same time, feel good about the fact that
the same Internet network is helping to improve the efficiency and reliability
of the electric grid while reducing its environmental impact."
El Segundo,
Calif. based DirecTV, provides
satellite television services had has more than 16.3 million customers in the
U.S. Current Group, which had received in 2005 a $100 million investment from
companies such as Google, Goldman Sachs and General Electric, is the most important
