Hasbro and Universal Pictures shook hands on a six-year partnership that will see several of the toy company’s most popular franchises turned into feature films. Now we can all sit back and wait for the Ridley Scott-directed “Monopoly” to come up – can Russell Crowe star?
Universal Pictures announced its six-year partnership with Hasbro that will bring the public at least four feature films based on branded properties, Variety reports. The properties include Monopoly, Candy Land, Clue, Ouija, Battleship, Magic: The Gathering and Stretch Armstrong.
The precedent has been set, with Hasbro property Transformers transformed by Paramount Pictures in the Michael Bay-directed 2007 live action film adaptation of the same name, starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and Jon Voight. A sequel is scheduled to begin production this year, the trade paper reports.
There are exceptions in the deal, with the above-mentioned Transformers and G. I. Joe allotted to Paramount. Stephen Sommers has recently begun production on “G. I. Joe.” The cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Dennis Quaid, among others.
As to Universal’s plans with Hasbro’s properties, the one closer to fruition at the moment is “Monopoly,” which Ridley Scott is attached to direct. He previously directed “American Gangster” for the studio and next works on “Nottingham,” with frequent collaborator Russell Crowe (2000’s “Gladiator” received 5 Academy Awards, including for best picture and best actor).
We can expect “Monopoly” to be a comedy thriller, according to last summer’s reports.
No actors, directors or producers have been announced to be attached to the other movie projects.
“This deal gives Universal access to some of the greatest brands in the world,” Universal Pictures co-chiefs Marc Shmuger and David Linde said in a statement announcing the deal. “They offer an exciting opportunity for us to develop tentpole movies with built-in global brand awareness.”
