According to the inquest made on Thursday, Diana’s last words were “Oh my God,” on August 31, 1997.
Damien Dalby, a volunteer fireman that was off duty on the night of the terrible accident that ended Diana’s life, was inquired regarding the princess’ death. He, along with his brother and other two friends, were driving through Paris in the early morning of August 31, 1997.
He rushed to help the people trapped in the wreckage, never knowing that the woman in the back seat was Princess Diana.
Dalby said that the back door of the car was open and photographers were taking pictures. He was asked by Ian Burnett, counsel for the coroner, if the lady tried to speak. Dalby said that she was saying “Oh my God.”
When the paramedics arrived Diana was alive, but her death was pronounced later on at the hospital. Her lover Dodi al-Fayed, 42, and driver Henri Paul died on the spot, after their limousine crashed into a pillar in the Alma tunnel in Paris. They were trying to flee paparazzi, who had been pursuing them from the Ritz Hotel. The only survivor was bodyguard Trevor Rees.
Dalby communicated with him through a tourist because his English was not so good.
One of the paparazzi who had been tacking pictures shouted at one point: “She’s alive!”
According to media sources, Dalby told London's High Court: “People were taking pictures. Smoke was emanating from the Mercedes. I wanted to disconnect the battery but I couldn’t.”
Sebastien Pennequin, Dalby’s brother, said that he asked for the paparazzi to stop taking pictures and one said to him that the people must know that Princess Diana lives.
Jacques Morel, a Frenchman, is claiming that French photographer James Andanson organized a plan in order to stop their car in the tunnel so the paparazzi could take pictures. He says that he is writing a book on this subject.
