Gamers, rejoice! One of the most famous games franchises
will crawl back into our computers. Blizzard, the same guys who are set to rock
our world with Starcraft II, confirmed that soon Diablo III will be released.
The announcement was made by Mike Morhaime, CEO and
cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, during the 2008 Blizzard Entertainment
Worldwide Invitational at the Porte de Versailles Convention Centre in Paris, France.
Diablo III is maybe one of the most anticipated games ever.
The Diablo saga has started back in January 1997, when Blizzard North released
the first game of the series, Diablo.
With a dark, gothic story about the fight between Heaven and
Hell, set in the fictional Kingdom
of Khanduras. Diablo
quickly become one the best RPGs ever and inspired a plethora of new games. It
was followed by an expansion, Diablo: Hellfire, which was produced by
Sierra.
Diablo II, released in 2000 four years after the original
Diablo game, become an instant hit and Blizzard sold close to 17 millions
copies.
One year later, Blizzard released an expansion, Diablo II:
Lord of Destruction and ever since the fans are waiting for the next
installment.
In 2003, some of the people who created Diablo II, such as
Blizzard North Vice President Bill Roper and producer Kenneth Williams founded
a new game company, Flagship Studios, which is developing HellGate: London, a RPG with some
first-person shooter elements.
Since the release Diablo II: Lord of Destruction there were
rumors that Blizzard will release a new game, but the company stayed mum about
the future of Diablo III. Until today when Mike Morhaime took the stage to officially announce Diablo III, the
game official site and to unveil a trailer.
Apparently Diablo III will remain faithful to its legacy
(and this is maybe one of the best news) and its epic story will start twenty
years after the events of Diablo II.
The players will have fie distinct characters classed from
which to choose, and two of them were already announced: the Barbarian and the
Witch Doctor.
The official site, www.diablo3.com,
has already extended presentations of these two new characters.
“The barbarians consider it their sworn duty to protect Mount Arreat
and the mysterious object within. They believe that if they fail to uphold
their duty to the great mount, or are not given a proper burial upon its
slopes, they will be denied a true warrior's death, and their spirits shall
roam the land without honor for all eternity” is written in the presentation of
Barbarians.
It seems like the Witch Doctors are similar to the Necromancers
from Diablo II.
“The witch doctors are finely attuned to this Unformed Land and are able to train their minds
to perceive this reality through a combination of rituals and the use of
selected roots and herbs found in the jungles. They call the state in which
they interact with this other world the Ghost Trance” wrote Abd al-Hazir in
their presentation.
The official site has already some details about the beasts
the players will encounter during the game. For the moment the Bestiary has
four entries: Undead (the descendents of the skeletons), Khazra (colloquially
known as "goatmen"), Gnarled Walkers and Dark Cultists.
Diablo III will be released on PC and Mac, but the official launch
date and other details are yet to be announced. The trailer is available here.
