Diabetes Rate Up 90%

A study shows that in the past 10 years the rate of people suffering from diabetes has increased with a devastating 90% in the US. Doctors claim that the diabetes epidemic has its main source in the many case of obese people and in the sedentary lifestyle which can lead to many other health problems, including diabetes.

The most common form of the disease is type 2 diabetes and doctors say that it can be prevented if people would embrace a healthier diet and if they would exercise regularly. Type 2 diabetes manifests itself by making the body not to produce enough insulin in order to transform the sugar in the blood into energy. Study shows that 90% of the new cases of diabetes are closely connected to the increasing rate of obesity, meaning that type 2 diabetes is now the most common form of the disease.

The study shows that the states most affected by the epidemic are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia in the south and Arizona. Knowing where the problems are worst means that preventive measures can be applied better and might just show some positive results in time.

Doctors say that a healthy lifestyle and, generally, a well balanced diet is the key not only to preventing diabetes but also other diseases.

This study makes authorities focus more on this problem as a 90% increase in 10 years is very worrying. Other studies show that diabetes medication has become more and more expensive, newer treatments not showing any better results on the long run than the old drugs used in treating this disease.
