Last summer Detroit Mayor Kwame
Kilpatrick denied the allegations that he was romantically involved with his chief
of staff Christine Beatty in 2002 and 2003. But the Detroit Free Press came to
contradict that and said the mayor did exchange romantic text messages with
Beatty and so he lied under oath in his testimony.
The newspaper found 14,000
messages on Christine Beatty’s pager, dating back to 2002 and 2003, which
unveil a romantic relationship between the two, are here are some examples: “I’m
madly in love with you,” “And did you miss me, sexually?” “I’ve been dreaming
all day about having you all to myself for 3 days. Relaxing, laughing, talking,
sleeping and making love,” and many more.
Kilpatrick dismissed the
allegations in his court testimony last year, as disrespectful and demoralizing
for both Beatty and his family. The discovery of the text messages however not
only comes to contradict his statement, but he could also face more serious charges
of perjury, that are punished with 15 years’ imprisonment.
The mayor released a statement
on Wednesday asking for the press to back off, as this is a difficult moment in
his life and “it is profoundly embarrassing to have these extremely private
messages now displayed in such a public manner. My wife and I worked our way
through these intensely personal issues years ago. I would now ask that the
public and the media respect the privacy of my wife and children and of Christine
Beatty and her children at this deeply painful moment for our families.”
What the next step will be in
this situation remains unknown, as no comments have been made on a possible
re-opening of an investigation. The police officers that accused Kilpatrick and
his security unit of intimidation after they began investigating the
allegations against the mayor were granted $6.5 million by the county jury.
