Hollywood star Denzel
Washington will star in post-apocalyptic drama “Book of Eli,” under the
direction of Allen and Albert Hughes, reports trade paper Variety.
Academy Award winning actor Denzel Washington is going to
pour his thespian genius into another film, a project financed by Warner
Bros.-based Alcon Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros.
Washington will portray a
character described by Variety as a “lone hero” who has one impressive mission:
that of striving to save America,
in a nearby apocalyptic future, from some kind of mysterious demise. Washington’s character
apparently has the solution for the country’s “redemption.”
The script is penned by Gary Whitta, with a rewrite from
Anthony Peckham. Whitta recently adapted the graphic novel “Akira,” adds
Variety.
Joel Silver (who has produced classics such as the
“Predator,” “Lethal Weapon” and “Matrix” films) is producing, along with
Washington, Susan Downey (wife of actor Robert Downey Jr.) and Alcon co-founders
Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.
Washington
is due on set in January, when filming begins.
The 53-year-old actor, who has two Academy Awards to date, one
for best actor for 2001’s “Training Day” and another for best supporting actor
for 1989’s “Glory,” last graced the silver screen in 2007’s “The Great
Debaters.” He also directed the drama.
He next appears in the Tony Scott directed “The Taking of
Pelham 123,” alongside John Travolta. The remake of a 1974 thriller will be
released next year via Columbia.
Other recent projects of Denzel Washington’s include “Man on Fire,” “The Manchurian Candidate,” “Inside Man” and “American Gangster,” all critically
acclaimed films which further confirmed the actor’s brilliant status.
