Actor Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly Buffington’s newborn twins are reportedly struggling for life in a Los Angeles hospital after they were accidentally given a drug overdose.
Celebrity gossip website TMZ reported that the couple’s babies, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, are at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after they were administrated an overdose of Heparin, which is an anti-coagulant used to flush out IV lines and prevent blood clots. The normal dosage for babies is 10 units but the twins were given 10,000 units, twice and they started to “bleed out” on Sunday night because their blood was too thinned.
The two are now at the neo-natal intensive care unit where they are listed in stable condition, according to the website.
A statement issued by Quaid’s publicist said, "Dennis and Kimberly appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers and hope they can maintain their privacy during this difficult time."
Suanne Buggy, a spokeswoman for the state health department, said she could not provide further details about the incident. A hospital spokesman did not provide an immediate comment.
Quaid and his wife welcomed the twins, who were born to a surrogate mother, on November 8.
"God has definitely blessed us," the couple said in a statement at the time.
