Actor Dennis Quaid and wife Kimberly have reached a $750,000
settlement with Cedars-Sinai
Medical Center
in the case of their newborn twins’ accidental heparin overdose in November
2007.
The unfortunate incident created a massive buzz. Newborn
twins Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace were barely two weeks old when hospital staff
at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
accidentally administered heparin doses 1,000 times the common dosage for
infants. The babies’ lives were in danger for several days before they
recovered.
The Quaids filed a lawsuit against drug manufacturer Baxter
Healthcare, accusing the company of negligence in packaging doses for children
and adults in similarly looking vials.
While the couple has reached a settlement with Cedars, the
one with Baxter continues.
The Quaids have reached a settlement with the medical center
for $75,000 and the agreement is currently pending the approval of a Los Angeles judge.
Documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday say
the settlement comes as a result of “extensive negotiations” and aims to “avoid
the time, expense and uncertainty of litigation.”
Cedars-Sinai has been fined $25,000 by the California
Department of Public Health. Hospital officials said they fully cooperated with
state authorities. They also said they would pay the fine.
Dennis Quaid appeared before Congress in mid-May, along with
a group of doctors and legal experts, urging legislators to make sure families
can sue drug and medical device makers over such dangerous medication errors.
Quaid’s babies are healthy and safe nowadays, with the
medical error having come to a “happy ending,” a the actor previously said.
