Dell announced the update of its Optiplex desktop line with
ten new models. In addition to this offer, the company also decided to provide
availability to its Flexible Computing and Managed Desktop services in other
markets, not just in the United States.
Jeff Clarke, senior vice president of Dell's Business
Product Group, explained that the new machines consume a lot less power that
the models used by many of today’s consumers. "With depreciation cycles of
four or five years, those aging desktop machines out there are costing
customers more money," he added. Mr. Clarke also talked about the
company’s commitment to offer users the best available solution by successfully
combining hardware, software and services.
The new desktop line includes the FX160, the Optiplex 960
available for $863, the 760 which retails for $593 and the 360, selling for
$475.
"We really believe in flexibility and not coming in and
saying that the only way to do it is have a virtual client, or the only way to
do it is a thin client," Mr. Clarke said.
The Atom-based FX160 can be bought for $399 and features the
Intel Atom processor. It can be equipped with up to 2GB of NVRAM flash storage
and up to 4GB of system memory and it was developed to complement many of
Dell’s services, such as its On-Demand Desktop Streaming. The 960 features
Intel’s latest iteration of VPro technology, making certain tasks a lot easier.
It features Intel Core 2 Quad and Duo processors in Intel's Q45 Express
chipset, wireless networking, RAID, Solid State Drives, DisplayPort and eSATA.
