In the tech world there are a lot of ideas and concepts, which would not make it past the prototype phase. This seems to be the case with the long rumored Dell mobile phone, another alleged iPod killer that had bite the dust before becoming more than a rumor.
If I remember correctly, the first rumors about Dell working on a smartphone have emerged back in 2007, when the Round Rock-based company has decided to axe its Axim PDA.
After that, there were various rumors that Dell was working on a series of smartphones over the past year. In January, the Wall Street Journal reported that those prototypes include a phone with a touch-screen keyboard and another one with a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
However, Dell didn’t confirm the rumors and now Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu shed some light on what happened with Dell and its alleged smartphone.
According to a report published by Wu on Firday, Dell has managed to create some mobile phones, which were designed to run software from Microsoft and Google (respectively on Google Android and Windows Mobile).
However, according to Wu, Dell’s devices have failed to impress the mobile carriers and this means that we won’t be seeing a mobile phone from Dell anytime soon, even the company seemed ready to subsidize the price of the future devices.
Though giving up to a project is always a hard decision, this could be a good thing for Dell. With new iPhone models rumored to come out anytime soon, this is not a time for a hit and miss action from Dell.
