Recent reports surfaced over the Internet about Dell’s intentions to enter the smartphone market as soon as next month. The rumors claim that the upcoming line of devices will be based on Google’s Android platform and on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. Apparently, the company is currently developing an iPhone like device and also a smartphone with a slide out keyboard, as it is looking to cover a wider market.
The company’s officials refused to address the matter, saying that they will not comment on speculation. Still, these rumors have been going around for quite some time and all the information revealed lately might point out that the project is indeed in the works.
Dell attempted to enter the mobile business before, by selling a range of Windows Mobile-based devices under the Axim brand, but unfortunately, the company’s officials decided to discontinue making them in 2007 as a result of the slow sales registered.
At least one part might not be completely accurate, as it is unlikely for Dell to release its new line over the next couple of weeks without properly promoting the event and making sure that people hear about the launch. All these reports and articles can surely be tagged as advertising, but clearly a well put-together campaign could do a whole lot more for Dell.
The smartphone market caught the eye of the public over the past year, with all the companies involved recording good sales. There is still a lot of room in this segment for new devices and Dell could actually make it big - it all depends on the device, the price and services provided.
