Dell Launches Adamo Notebook to Rival Apple’s MacBook Air

Dell launched its new line of laptops that according to many market analysts is intended to be an Apple MacBook Air killer.

The Adamo laptop line was launched on Tuesday and it features laptops with prices starting at $2000. Dell’s Adamo will compete with Apple’s MacBook Air and HP’s Voodoo Envy. The Adamo really is a beauty. So far, it seems to have the best chances of beating Apple’s MacBook Air, although I don’t think it will.

Many market analysts raised an eyebrow when Dell announced it will release a $2000 notebook. The company has taken a strong financial punch and is very vulnerable to the current economic crisis especially due to the fact that it receives about 80 percent of its earnings from business users which have a low rate of hardware renewing.

However, Dell management hopes the Adamo notebook won’t turn out to be just a well dressed guy with no place to go. Dell based its decision to manufacture and launch the Adamo notebook on two major factors of influence: the trend toward design-focused purchase of laptops and the company’s long-term customer allegiance.

The Adamo, one of the most anticipated laptops of the year 2009, will start selling on March 26, but you can preorder it from Dell today.

Inside the Dell Adamo

Dell said that its Adamo laptop line is the tiniest in the world. The Adamo has a uniform thickness of 0.65 inch (MacBook Air - 0.76 inch, Voodoo Envy - 0.7 inch). It has a MacBook Air-like aluminum body with a unibody design and will ship in two colors: onyx and pearl (that’s black and white).

The Adamo will ship in two versions. The base, $2000 version will feature a 1.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 processor (MacBook Air sports a 1.86GHz chip), 2 GB of DDR3 memory, a 128 GB SSD, pre-installed Windows Vista 64-bit and integrated graphics - Intel GS45 with 256 MB.

For $2700 you’ll get the second version which runs a 1.4 GHz SU9400 processor, 4 GB of memory and wireless HSPA broadband.

The new Dell laptop features a 13.4-inch LED backlit glossy widescreen (16:9) display with a 1,366 x 768 resolution. The Adamo weighs four pounds, one pound heavier than the MacBook Air.

Just like the MacBook Air, the Adamo does not have a built-in optical drive. Instead it features a separate external drive and also 250/500 GB external HDDs. Dell added to the Adamo an interesting SIM card slot on the right side of the device that can be used to connect to the Internet over high-speed Wi Fi networks.

The Adamo features two USB ports, one USB/eSATA port for the external optical drive/HDD, an Ethernet jack and a DisplayPort video output.
