Déjà-Vu With Microsoft’s XP SP3 Launch

Microsoft re-launched today its Windows XP Service Pack 3 after a problem with some of the software’s compatibility was noticed last week.

Apparently, an error was detected between XP SP3 or Vista SP1 and the Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS). The solution involves a filter which now identifies and blocks the Windows Update from offering Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 to computers with RMS.

Still, customers of the Dynamics RMS who use Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 are strongly advised by Microsoft to contact their Microsoft Customer Support Service for any kind of questions or future computer troubles.

The new SP3 is now available on Windows Update and also through Microsoft’s Download Center.

The initial release date was set for April 29, almost 4 years since the company’s last update with SP2.

The upgrade provides support for WPA2 and the Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRP) used in Windows Vista. It also contains minor performance and stability enhancements and also a cumulative security update.

Depending on the user’s computer, the download takes between 30 minutes and one hour. Another 10 minutes and also 580 MB are required for the full installation. PC Magazine presented step by step the installation process: the setup goes through listing third-party drivers, performs a system inventory, checks space for installation, backs up files, installs new OS files, and performs a cleanup. After that, a reboot is required and the update is now complete.
