Deftones bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a car accident
Monday in Santa Clara, California
and is now in a San Jose
hospital, listed as in serious but stable condition.
Chi Cheng, 38, bassist for California
rock band Deftones since its inception in the late 1980s, is in a coma after
being involved in a serious car crash Monday, Nov. 3, in Santa Clara, per The Associated Press. Little
is known about the circumstances of the accident or of the injuries sustained
by Cheng.
The rock band’s singer, Chino Moreno, posted a message on
the Deftones’ website Tuesday, Nov. 4, saying “our brother” Chi Cheng had been
involved in a “terrible” car accident Monday night and that he is currently in
a Northern California Hospital in serious but stale condition. Moreno said he and the rest of the band
members as well as families were on their way to Cheng’s side.
The singer added his bandmate is “one of the strongest
people” he knows and that he’s praying for him, asking fans to send a prayer as
well.
The Deftones was formed in 1988, in Sacramento, Calif.,
when the four childhood friends, Chino Moreno, Chi Cheng, Stephen Carpenter
(guitar) and Frank Delgado (keyboards and turntables), started playing in
Carpenter’s garage. They released their first album “Adrenaline,” in 1994, via
Madonna’s Maverick Records label.
“Elite,” off their 2000 album, “White Pony,” earned the band
a Grammy Award for best metal performance.
The band had been working hard in the studio on their sixth
album, “Eros,” which they planned to release next spring, via Warner Bros.
Chi Cheng has ventured on solo projects as well, releasing
in 2000 “The Bamboo Parachute,” a CD comprised of his own spoken word poetry.
