The news reported today about the death of Def Jam Records' Vice-President Shakir Stewart came as a big shock to everyone involved in the music industry and also fans everywhere.
Def Jam confirmed that Mr. Steward died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and released a statement saying that “LA Reid and all of us at Island Def Jam Music Group are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and colleague Shakir Stewart,” and also added that he was an amazing man, a great father and friend who represented a constant source of inspiration for all the artists involved with the label, the company’s employees but also for his family and friends. The statement ends with ”Our hearts and prayers go out to his family at this very difficult time.”
At this point, other details about the tragedy are not known or haven’t been released. There are many speculations, theories and rumors, but until an official response will be available is better to stay away from the gossip.
He graduated from Morehouse College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing. Mr. Shakir Stewart was promoted to VP of Def Jam on June 3 of this year, after a four-year carrier with the company. Before this, he worked as an A&R consultant at LaFace Records, hired by his idol and later to become mentor Antonio “L.A.” Reid. He was involved over the years with several great discoveries when it comes to popular artists, signing R&B singer Ciara, Rick Ross and Young Jeezy, just to name a few.
