Sunday seems to have been debuts’ night at the 62nd edition of the Tony Awards. The prizes for Best musical and best play were both taken by young debutants. The best musical prize went to ‘In the Heights’, a show created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, while ‘August: Osage County’ managed to nick the prize for best play.
‘In the Heights’ tells the story of the families of Latino emigrants that live in Manhattan and presents the hardships of their lives. The music is fully flavored with salsa and hip-hop scores. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is 28, is at his debut in professional theatre, let alone on Broadway.
The creator of the musical rapped through his speech and declared that he has more musicals inside his head and that he is looking forward to writing them down. ‘Ion the Heights’ also won the prizes for best original score written for the theatre, best choreography and best orchestration.
‘August: Osage County’ is a family drama about a Midwestern clan that is facing problems and has to deal with suicide and drug abuse. The writer of the play, which also won a Pulitzer Prize, is Tracy Letts, a former actor who had his debut on Broadway this year.
Deana Dunagan and Rondi Reed, both playing in ‘August,’ won the prizes for best performance by a leading actress and best performance by a featured actress respectively. ‘August’ also won the best director of a play prize for Anna D.Shapiro, and best scenic design of a play for Ann G. Wrightson
