Debatable O.J. Simpson’s “If I Did It” passed over the
universal outcry that generated the last November among the US public opinion and after
HarperCollins’ refusal to publish it, a New York-based small publisher,
Beaufort Books took the part.
It is even more astonishing to discover that behind Beaufort
Books sits Fred Goldman, the father of Ronald Goldman whom Simpson killed,
along with his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. The decision appears to be
purely vindictive, as Mr. Goldman suggests, and judging from the facts, those
of Simpson being acquitted in 1995 for murdering the both.
During the summer a federal bankruptcy judge transferred the
book’s rights to Kim and Fred Goldman, as a means of compensating a wrongful
$38 million death judgment. As a result, the Goldmans used an almost
transparent font to write “If” and added to the title “Confessions of the
Killer”, making it to become an almost “I Did It: Confessions of the Killer”.
Invited to “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, the Goldmans explained
their decision, on the other side being Nicole’s sister, Denise Brown and Oprah
herself, which expressed their blunt disgust to the project. They were invited
on Thursday, the very day of the book’s release. Denise refused to sit on the
same stage as them, showing her disapproval of their actions.
Oprah asked if they didn’t consider the book as “blood
money” and they responded accordingly to their actions: “It's sending him a
message," Kim Goldman said. "He put hours putting together this confession
about how he killed Ron and Nicole, and he worked hard thinking he was going to
make millions off of it. And we snatched it right out from under him.”
Oprah insisted to express her disapproval of the book: “I
don't want to be in the position to promote this book, because I, too, think
it's despicable,” acknowledging that the materials she presented during her
show have become best-sellers.
The part that makes even more disappointing the Goldmans’
decision is that the book doesn’t actually present how he planned the killings,
but puts Nicole in a wrong light and attests Simpson’s wrongdoing to her all
throughout their living together.
