Death of Quiet Riot's Kevin DuBrow Shrouded in Mystery

Kevin DuBrow, lead singer of 1980s metal band Quiet Riot, was found dead in his Las Vegas home Sunday, Nov. 25; the cause of death is being investigated by authorities.

MTV.com reported Monday that Kevin DuBrow, lead singer of 1980s band Quiet Riot, had passed away; he was only 52. MTV reports that that the musician’s body was found by neighbors inside his home; police and paramedics were called and DuBrow was pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m.

The band’s drummer, Frankie Banali, and the bassist, Kelly Garni, as well as Quiet Riot’s current label, Chavis Records, have confirmed the death of DuBrow. He had celebrated his 52nd anniversary last month in New Orleans and seemed to be in good health, people close to the singer said.

The official cause of his death remains to be determined, pending autopsy and toxicology results, but a spokesperson for the Las Vegas police department has said there is no suspicion of foul play. There were reportedly no signs of forced entry at DuBrow’s home.

Quiet Riot was originally formed in 1975 by Randy Rhoads; four years later, when he joined Ozzy Osbourne’s band, the group split. DuBrow is credited with the successful revival of Quiet Riot – he formed a band he called DuBrow in 1980 and after Rhoads’ death in 1983, reverted to the original name of Quiet Riot.

The band enjoyed success in the following years, most notably for their cover version of Slade’s “Cum on Feel the Noize,” from their 1983 album “Metal Health.”

Quiet Riot is credited with contributing to the launch of the 1980s glam-metal genre; “Metal Heart” has the historical merit of being the first by a metal band to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, per MTV.

In 1987, mounting opposition between band members led to the firing of DuBrow however, they eventually reunited and released several albums during the 1990s, including “Terrified,” “Down to the Bone,” “Alive” and “Well and Guilty Pleasures.”

Their most recent album, “Rehab,” was released in 2006. The band had remained active touring. In 2004, DuBrow released a collection of covers as his first solo LP, “In for the Kill.”

Chavis Records owner Bill Chavis said: “DuBrow's body was found by friends on Sunday, November 25, in his Las Vegas home. As I mourn his death with a heavy heart, I will remember hearing his voice and the music for the very first time on the radio back in 1983.

I will remember all the great music Kevin and Quiet Riot gave to so many of us over the years and I will say, 'Thank you, Kevin. May you rest in peace.'”

Garni meanwhile posted a message on a tribute website for the late Randy Rhoads, urging fans to have patience as the investigation unravels. “I ask that no one here offer any speculation or opinions, theories or other things that could be construed as negative or, and I'm sorry for this, even sympathetic, right at this immediate time.

“I will explain to everyone here the facts and the truth in the next 24 to 48 hours as I realize this will affect us all.”
