Deadly Ricin Discovered In Las Vegas Motel

According to authorities, a package containing toxin ricin was found at a motel on Thursday and seven people who were in contact with it were rushed to the hospital.

Around 3 p.m. on Thursday police was called at an Extend Stay America hotel when a man brought a bag with a container to the manager’s office.

He said that he found it while retrieving things from the hotel room.

Capt. Joe Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said: “It's 100 percent ricin. We don't know who (the ricin) belongs to or why it would be here at this time,” CNN reports.

According to Officer Ramon Dendy, three employees and a fourth person who entered the room were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Also three officers who entered the room were under supervision at the hospital.

Symptoms of ricin poisoning can include difficulty breathing, fever, cough, nausea and sweating to severe vomiting and dehydration.

Lombardo said: “We did have enough ricin to be of concern. At this point, it has been contained and processed where it's not a threat to anybody.”

According to Lombardo, the area is under quarantine and the seven people who have been in the room have been decontaminated.

Las Vegas Metro Police was joined in the investigation by Homeland Security officials.

This discovery raised warning signs among the authorities as the discovery of ricin in other countries was linked to extremists.

Lombardo said: "This is not a terror incident at this point."

Authorities don’t have a suspect at this time.

Ricin is obtained from castor beans that are processed.

Castor beans were found by police officers in the room and powder in a small vial. Almost 500 micrograms of ricin can be deadly for an adult.

Ricin is not illegal to be owned, but it is illegal to processed it and use it in order to poison someone.
