The cancer he was diagnosed with in 2003 still haunts Robert
De Niro, despite he’s full recovery. An insurance company has filed a lawsuit
in Los Angeles
federal court against Robert De Niro, accusing him of filing false medical information
on an insurance application.
Fireman's Fund Insurance Co claims that De Niro failed to
disclose that he had prostate cancer back in 2003 when the company signed on to
insure the production of Hide and Seek.
The suit alleges that De Niro cost the company more than
$1.8 million when it was forced to pay Fox studios for a filming delay caused
by the actor`s illness.
"Mr De Niro failed to fully disclose information which
was critical to our decision to offer insurance coverage," said the
insurance company. "As a result, the film had to be postponed for four
months, at significant cost to the motion picture production company."
De Niro's lawyer said that there is no way Fireman's Fund
can establish liability on the actor's part. De Niro was diagnosed with
prostate cancer on Oct. 15, 2003, the motion states, five days after he
underwent a gland biopsy and two days after he filled out the medical
certificate.
"One day you don't have cancer, and the next day you
get diagnosed and you do, and this happened to be in the middle of those couple
of days," said Robyn Crowther, De Niro’s legal counsel.
“Firemans Fund is suing Robert De Niro because he got
cancer,” Crowther added. “They opportunistically took advantage of the fact
that he got bad medical news to get out of their insurance obligations under
their policy with Fox.”
