“Saturday Night Live”, or SNL for short, is one of the most popular and long-running comedy shows in the history of American television. The show debuted in 1975, and it features a regular cast, usually made up of novice comedians. Each show is hosted by a celebrity guest host and it also features a musical act. Because it’s based on comedy, sketches and skits meant to attract a wide array of audiences, some of the jokes may be frowned upon by parts of the public.

Some of the people who are impersonated on the show take the skits for what they are – skits meant to entertain the American people. Some of greatest sports when it came down to taking a joke were undoubtedly John McCain and Sarah Palin, who were viciously ridiculed during the 2008 presidential campaign, yet they ended up appearing on the show in an attempt to pull a publicity stunt. No matter the true reasons behind their guest starring on SNL, they still showed a sense of humor by taking jokes for what they are meant to be.

When Amy Poehler was saying her farewell as the permanent cast member has decided to leave SNL, another cast member, namely Fred Armisen entered the scene impersonating the blind Governor of New York, David Patterson. The fake Patterson has the difficult task to appoint a replacement for Senator Hillary Clinton. The character says that he will base his choice on three criteria: economic experience, upstate influence and a disability that would render that person unfit and unprepared for the job, thus designating himself as an ideal candidate – he even holds a chart illustrating the job losses in New York upside down.

Unfortunately, the National Federation of the Blind doesn’t share CBS’s sense of humor, and considers the blind skit as an “attack on all blind Americans”. The real Patterson said that generally he can indeed take a joke, but he does add that most blind people can’t find jobs and that such crude jokes don’t help matters at all.
